New Horizons: Guide to Student Transition
Empowerment
During the transition process, the more information you obtain the more power you will possess. The first area to obtain information is the area of self. To direct transitional planning a student must have a good understanding of their wants, needs, abilities, interests, strengths, and limitations. This process is called Self-Determination. To become self-determined, you must examine your vocational interests and abilities, learning styles, social skills, interests and hobbies, ability to set goals, and make positive choices.
The next step is to learn how to self-advocate. Know and understand yourself. Next, explore all the supportive services available to you. Based on your wants and needs, plan your transition program and enlist all the supportive services that could aid your program. Enlisting the aid of supportive services usually means a lot of phone calls. Below, you will find a basic phone script to help you make initial contacts.
If you are lucky enough to reach a "live" person, they will most likely be a secretary or receptionist. It is important for you to ask to speak with the person who will directly answer your question. You will not need to go into depth with the receptionist unless they ask for specific information to know where to forward your call. Always have paper and pencil ready before you make your call. It is also a good idea to have a list of questions written before making your call.
Opening comment options:
- Hello, my name is "say your name" . I am interested in information about ______________services. Who could help me with this?
- Hi, my name is " say your name" . I need help with______________. Who should I talk to?
- If you reach a recording, listen for the instructions and follow them. It is a good idea to have a piece of paper and pen to write down option numbers. If you need to leave a message, there is usually a beep. Wait to leave your message until after the beep is finished. Be sure to say your first and last name and phone number clearly, followed by a brief message.
