Oak Manor 6th Grade Center has been selected as a Michigan Freedom to Learn "Showcase School." All students in this school experience a true 1-to-1 computing environment. We welcome the opportunity to show off what we are doing in this exciting educational environment. Please read the short description of our program. We welcome your visit to our school. Oak Manor Center, located in southwest lower Michigan, is the only 6th Grade Center in the Niles Community School District. The 3995 student district consists of an early childhood center, three elementary schools(K-5), one middle school (7-8), and one high school (9-12). There are approximately 300 students from diverse backgrounds who attend Oak Manor Center each year. Oak Manor Center became a 6th Grade Center in 2005. Niles Community Schools has been involved with the Freedom to Learn Program (Michigan’s laptop program) for 3 years. During the first two years 6th graders participated in their individual elementary classrooms. Having all 6th grade students in one building has made a huge difference for both our staff and students.

Comprised
of only sixth grade students this center serves as a transition between
the elementary and secondary schools. Niles Community Schools assessed that
students’ needs can be better served at a Sixth Grade Center than
at the elementary level. The 6th Grade Center offers students a wide variety of fine arts electives, intramural sports, clubs, and student council activities, which model a secondary school. The school offers full inclusion for students with learning disabilities and small groups with at-risk students through content-based team instruction. Students modify their negative behavior through our Violence Prevention program.

Technology is used at Oak Manor to empower students to become engaged learners. As a result of Niles Community Schools participation in the FTL program, each student is assigned their own laptop with wireless internet access. Students use their laptop throughout the day to enhance the learning experience. Not only do teachers and students use technology to present lessons, but also use document cameras, DVD/VCR's, and LCD projectors.

A top technology priority at Oak Manor is technology training and support for teachers, students, and parents to promote enhanced student achievement. Niles Community Schools is fortunate to have a technology coordinator and support staff that provide training that is vital to ensure maximum use of the technology infrastructure. Due to the intensive training that Oak Manor teachers have received they are being used as trainers for other staff members throughout the district. In addition, because of the technology available at Oak Manor it has become the proving ground for technology used within the district.

| Visitors to Oak Manor will learn first hand how

Because our main mission is the education of our students we must control the amount of time spent on site visits. For that reason we limit visits to Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between the hours of 9 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. ET. We would like to limit the number of visitors to groups of 10 or less.
Your site visit will consist of the following:
- An opportunity to talk with the principal of the school
- Classroom observations (maybe sit in and participate in a class)
- A discussion with the technology director or a technology staff member
- Meet with our "lead" teachers and find out what their role is
- Opportunities to talk to classroom teachers in different subject areas
To schedule a visit please contact the principal, Robin Hadrick.
