Videoconference Project: Famous Texans in History -A Creative Drama Approach

This project was created as an assignment in Planning Interactive Curriculum Connections, an online class offered by Berrien RESA and taught by Janine Lim.

Topic: Famous Texans in History

Description: Fourth grade students study famous Texans in history and choose a Texan to present, through creative drama, to another fourth grade class. Students will get into groups of 4 or 5 to do a 5 minute skit about their Texan, noting not to reveal who they are presenting ? for the other class is to figure it out. Students may dress in costumes to emphasize their Texan or include drawings, props, photographs, or music that enhances their performance.

Learner Outcomes: The students will be able to express and present information in a creative way and be able to evaluate others in a manner that is beneficial to them.

Time Frame: About 55-60 minutes total

Before: Prior to doing the videoconferencing, spend a week or two learning about the different Texans who made an impact in history. Be able to spend a day preparing and practicing before actually doing the videpconferencing.

During: Spend about the first 5 minutes getting to know the class (share your location, something about your class, school, etc.). Each class should get about 20 minutes to present their famous Texan(s) and have the other class ask questions and reveal who they were portraying. The last 10 minutes should be a discussion period in which both classes can ask questions/comments on what went on. It is like a reflection time.

After: Have the class write follow up letters to the other class about how they felt and what they got out of it.

Number of classes that can participate: One from our school and one from another location - class to class situation.

Type of Connection: Can accommodate ISDN and IP connections.
