Videoconference Project: The Rainforests of Costa Rica

This project was created as an assignment in Planning Interactive Curriculum Connections, an online class offered by Berrien RESA and taught by Janine Lim.

Topics: Classification: Cloud forest. Tropical dry forest. Tropical rain forest. Flora. Fauna. Additional topics: Protected areas. Biodiversity.

Brief Description

The students will explain the different types of rainforests that Costa Rica has. They will give the characteristics of each one and locate the areas where they can be found. They will explain the attractions that each forest has such as volcanoes, beaches, lagoons, rivers, etc. Flora and fauna will be described. This project could be made during the second quarter of the school year to fit our fourth grade curriculum.

Project Time Frame: Videoconference: 30 minutes (flexible if interacting)

How to sign up: Contact information: Lorena Villalta, lvillalta@lincoln.ed.cr

Project registration deadline
The deadline is no later than September 30th in order to prepare the VC with our fourth grade students.

Number of classes that can participate
Three classes would be a good since this type of lesson can be opened to questions but not so much to discussion. (Our equipment allows us to be a host, but it has never been tested as one.)

Type of connection
We can do both IP or ISDN but we prefer to use ISDN if possible.

Learners Outcomes
Students will learn about the different types and characteristics of rainforests in Costa Rica. They will understand the biological diversity due to location, geography, and climate. Students will see some examples of the flora and fauna found in these rainforests.

Methods and Activities
The topic will be presented as a lecture. At the end of the presentation, a space for questions will be opened.

Materials
A power point presentation will support the lesson. It will have the most important information and will be fully illustrated with pictures showing locations, fauna, and flora.

Time
The presentation will take 15 minutes plus 10 to 15 minutes for questions might be reasonable depending on the number of sites connected.

What will students do? What will teachers do?
Students will research the topic.
Students will prepare questions.
Teacher will moderate.

Agenda 20 to 30 minutes
