Topic: My Inventions
Grade level: 4th Grade
Possible dates/times: Open, maybe Spring 2006
Learner Outcomes:
- Students will learn about past inventions and how technology has changed our lives.
- Students will learn about videoconferencing.
- Students will learn how to become participants in vc; active listeners; and how to ask questions along with proper vc behavior.
- Students will learn how to think creatively.
- Students will learn how to present their inventions during a vc.
Methods & Activities:
Students will be in pairs/groups/working alone to create an invention. The invention doesn't have to be "brand-new." It could very well be an idea to make an existing product better. The students will draw out their inventions either in KidPix or another such program. The invention should be named.
Each team will write a brief description of how their invention works. They will practice sharing their information and also anticipate questions from their audience.
During the vc, students will take turns sharing their invention and answering questions. Presentations should only be about 2-3 minutes long.
Materials:
1. Software for creating the inventions.
2. VC equipment- possible with an Elmo for showing the drawings.Time:
1. Learning and Appreciating Techology - depends on each teacher
2. Creating their inventions - (1-2 45 minute sessions in the tech lab)
3. VC approximately 60-90 minutes depending on the number of inventions to be shared.Students will:
-design/create an invention
-write up the description
-practice presenting it with/without the camea
-answer quesitons about their inventionTeachers will:
-model the presentation & Q&A session for students
-model proper vc behavior
-act as a consultant while the students are working on their inventions
