Videoconference Project: Ask the Pioneers: Deerfield History Swap


This project was created as an assignment in Planning Interactive Curriculum Connections, an online class offered by Berrien RESA and taught by Janine Lim.

Learner Outcomes:
Visiting students will:
- Ask questions about life in the Pioneer Valley in the 1600's
Deerfield students will:
- As a culminating project for their local history unit which covers life in the Pioneer Valley in the 1600's (once considering the wilderness), be able to answer questions about life during that time
- Construct or obtain authentic dress, speech, and characters from the time

Methods/Activities:
- Visiting students do basic research on Deerfield and life in the 1600's (timeline, maps, and basic history - 1 or 2 class periods)
-Visiting students email questions ahead of time to Deerfield students (optional).
- Deerfield students create characters, costumes, speech patterns for their reenactment
- Deerfield students decide the key points they want to convey about life in Deerfield in the 1600's
- Using video conferencing visiting students ask questions of the Deerfield Pioneers

Time:
1. Two weeks to prepare and practice.
2. 45 minute video conference
3. Follow-up letters to the other class.

Who may participate:
A fourth grade to sixth classroom in the midwest, south, or west
