Videoconference Project: Bully Free - That's Me!


This project was created as an assignment in Planning Interactive Curriculum Connections, an online class offered by Berrien RESA and taught by Janine Lim.

ADVERTISEMENT:
This program is designed to help students gain insight into their own background and to learn about others. Each week the students will be able to discuss via e-mail topics related to bullying behavior. Afer examining thier own prejudices and those of others, students will be ale to learn how to deal with bullying. The program will end with a final project called a "me - book" being designed and shared via videoconference with the other class of pen-pals.

Bully Prevention
Sixth grade students 15-20 per class

POSSIBLE DATES/TIME:
Pen pals will be selected in September 2005. The videoconference will take place in early November

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Student will learn how to communicate through e-mail
Student will learn how about videoconferencing
Student will understand he importance of using proper spelling, sentence structure
Student will learn how to formulate questions and utilize research skills
Student will learn responsibility of answering e-mails promptly
Students will gain a greater understanding of who they are in developing their "Me Book"
Student will utilize creativity in designing their project
Student will understand the impact of bullying
Student will be able to develop strategies to deal with a bully and how not to become a bully themselves
Students will gain accountability as they are expected to remain bully free and help their pal to be bully free

METHODS/ACTIVITIES
1. Students will be introduced to the concept of bullying through a bully program presented from the Berrien County Council for Children
2. Students will be joined with a partner from another school to e-mail
3. Students will introduce themselves to their pen pals including the following:
1. Name/age/family
2. Three things they really like
3. Three things they really do not like
4. A funny story of something that had happened to them
4. Each week students will e-mail each other talking about a topic question about bullying their teachers have created. They will respond back to each others thoughts/questions
5. Each student will develop a "me-book" following guidelines the two teachers have created
6. At the end of the nine week marking period, students will participate in a videoconference to meet their pen-pals. They will show their "Me-Book" and discuss what they had learned

MATERIALS:
1. Access to e-mail and videoconferencing supplies
2. List of bully free topic questions
3. List of criteria for "me book"
4. Scrap booking supplies

TIME:
1. E-mail correspondence will take place one class session each week (45 minutes)
2. "Me " Book" creation " teacher decides how much class time will be allowed
3. Final videoconference " extended class for sharing of "me-books" (60-90 min)

TEACHER/STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
1. Teachers will prepare weekly topic questions together
2. Teachers will create criteria for Me-book together
3. Students will e-mail pen pals
4. Students will research and create "me-books"
5. Students will present "me-books"
